Leh Guide: Acclimatization & Local Trails
"A vital guide to acclimatizing in Leh (3,500m), checking out local sights like Shanti Stupa and Spituk Monastery, and avoiding AMS."

Acclimatization is the single most important factor for any Ladakh trip. Arriving in Leh (3,500 meters / 11,500 feet) via air or road places immediate pressure on your body due to the lower atmospheric pressure and oxygen levels.
Acclimatization Tips (Avoiding Altitude Sickness)
- Rest Completely on Day 1: Do not go sight-seeing or walk uphill. Rest in your hotel bed for at least 24 hours.
- Hydrate Regularly: Drink 4–5 liters of water daily. You can supplement it with ORS or electrolyte drinks.
- Avoid Alcohol & Smoking: These dehydrate your body and make it harder to adjust.
- Prophylactic Medication: Consult a doctor about taking Diamox (Acetazolamide) starting 24 hours before your ascent.
Local Exploration Highlights
Once you feel fully adjusted on Day 2, you can start exploring local spots in and around Leh town.
Spituk Monastery
Spituk Gompa stands on a conical hill overlooking the Indus river. Founded in the 11th century, it is home to around 100 monks and houses a giant statue of Goddess Kali.
Leh Palace
This nine-story palace was modeled after Lhasa’s Potala Palace by King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th century. The upper floors provide a stunning 360-degree vista of Leh town and the surrounding Stok Kangri mountain ranges.
Shanti Stupa
Built by Japanese Buddhists to promote world peace, the Shanti Stupa is a white-domed stupa sitting atop a hill in Chanspa. It is the absolute best spot in Leh to view the sunset.
